The body of the late Kenyan runner Joan Jepngetich has been flown from the United States (US) to Nairobi.
Jepngetich’s body was received at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) last night by his family and athletics stakeholders.
The deceased died at the age of 22 in a tragic road accident on 26 December 2024 after the car he was traveling in with two other people lost control near Barstow, Galesburg.
Two occupants of the Mercedes Benz also died while being treated for serious injuries they sustained during the crush.

Jepngetich, who has enrolled at Carl Sandburg College, is from Kapsabet, Nandi County.
Before her unexpected death, the late runner had helped her school’s women’s team to the Arrowhead Conference cross country championship after registering a second-place finish in her discipline.
The former Community College student has lifetime bests of 19:29.46 and 2:39.49 in the 5000m and 800m respectively.
Jepngetich’s body was moved to Montezuma Funeral Home in Nairobi ahead of Tuesday’s funeral which is expected to take place in Chebarbar.
Speaking at JKIA, Kipkurui Chepkwony, who is a close friend of the late runner’s family, stated that Jepngetich’s death was a huge loss for the entire community.
โThis is a huge loss for us as a community back home in Chebarbar. He was not just an athlete, but a neighbor and friend,โ he was quoted as saying by the Athletics Kenya (AK) website.
Chepkwony also took the opportunity on behalf of the affected families to thank everyone who has supported them in one way or another.
โThe college is very supportive as well as the athletic community at Illinois. They ensured that Joan’s body was safely transported to Nairobi from JFK airport.
The government also facilitated the clearing of bodies from airports and AK played an important role in facilitating communication between the athletic communities in Kenya and America. We are very grateful for the support,โ he offered.

For her part, AK Chief Administrative Officer Susan Kamau promised the budding runners’ families that the federation would continue to support them.
โWe offer our condolences to the family and express our deepest sympathy to them. We want to assure the family that AK will stand with you during this trying moment,โ he said.
